The lowest possible permitted minimum wage is $5.15 an hour. That is a Federal mandate. No state can go below that federally mandated minimum.
However, each (any) state may RAISE the minimum wage above the federal $5.15 minimum, if that particular state chooses.

The federal minimum wage should be abolished. A minimum wage is a matter of states rights. Each state should be required to establish a minimum wage but since each state has different costs of living it is inappropriate to think that by setting nationwide minimum that everyone who is at that level will be paid the same. In order to help assure that people get a fair wage each almost every state has a minimum set well above the federal minimum wage.

ADDED: notme, since well before Clinton was in office states have been allowed to set their own minimum wage as long at it was no less than the federal wage.

That's really a very good question. I would like to see just where in the constitution it is permitted for the Federal government to insert itself in the negociations between free people.

Why then does it stop with minimum wages why not federally regulate all wages.

States are free to set a higher minimum than the feds.
