The Trial, by Franz Kafka. Preparatory reading for final year at uni! As I'm sure you can imagine, it's pretty heavy....

I am currently reading Black Dog of Fate by Peter Balakian. It is about the Armenian Genocide. I think it is really good for the following reasons.
1. He writes well. I feel like I am learning a lot without wading through facts and figures.
2. I guess to continue the thought in number one, I am learning a lot. I never really heard much about what happened to the Armenians.
3. It is relevant for today. Even though he is writing mostly about events that took place in the first decades of the 20th century, I read an article today in USA Today describing what is happening in Darfur, and some of the things were exactly the same.

What am I reading at the moment?

'Al-Qaeda', Jason Burke - good history of the movement

'Obedience to Authority', Stanley Milgram - chilling psychology experiment from the 60s

'Valis', Philip K. Dick - weird SF novel by one of my favourite writers

'The Quest of the Historical Jesus', Albert Schweitzer - seminal work in Biblical scholarship, demonstrates the unreliability of the Bible as a guide to historical fact

'Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy', Bernard Williams - haven't got far enough in to say yet what it's about, but I like it

'The Complete Peanuts 1955-1956', Charles M. Schulz - the greatest, saddest cartoonist ever

All of them are brilliant. Yes, I normally am reading half a dozen books at a time.

I'm reading The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford. Much better than the more famous Love in a Cold Climate. Has made me laugh out loud on the train!

"Why Do Men Fall Asleep After Sex?" Mark Leyner and Billy Goldberg,M.D. THey also had one out called "Why Do Men Have Nipples" questions you would only ask your doctor after your third whiskey sour. There are some hilarious q & a inside! I just got done reading "The Fevre Dream" by George R.R. Martin, about a vampire troup that takes over a riverboat and goes up and down the Mississppi.
pretty good if you like vampire stories...

Just starting The Butcher of St. Peters By Michael Jecks, so don't know yet if any good. His usually are, but set in 1300's.
Just finished Dead Reckoning By Jack Higgins, absolutely brilliant.

Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress by Susan Gilman, it is good. Hope to finish it tonight so I can get started on the Peter Robinson books I have on hold at the library.
