B. Prior ro homesteading and fencing of thh plains with barbed and other wire fences, rangeland was wide open and cattle/sheep roamed freely over it. With the fencing of farm fields, the range was slowly but surely divided intro smaller and smaller parcels, until the open range was no longer open.

The range wars of the west (TX, NM, CO, etc) came about due to the fencing of water sources and range lands.
