If a woman seeks a long-term relationship, especially in marriage, then financial stability and security will certainly be of prime importance to her. This is true even if she has her own income, which may even exceed her husband's.
There are several reasons for this.
With today's huge manpower churns in most industries, a double-income family can suddenly become a single income family, with all the financial, social, and psychological tensions which go with such sudden changes.
Medical expenses and children's education are other prime considerations which contribute to this "obsession" as you put it, although I would call it a manifestation of fear.
Hence to prepare for such eventualities, a woman seeks a husband of a certain wealth level, so the family can have at least a modicum of financial security, and the change in standard of living (which God forbid) may not be too drastic.
I think a woman's fear in this matter is reasonable to some extent, and maybe we men should also be a little more concerned and make a habit of putting something by regularly.
By the way, if by "obsession" you mean your wife keeps nagging you to save more, then please listen to her. Without wanting to offend you, I might say her intuition is probably sharper than yours, and so too would be her money management skills. In this one matter at least you won't regret doing as she says. She'll be pleased in the short term, and you'll be pleased in the long term. I say this from personal experience.

It's not so much about being obsessed?
But to earn it (money) for the fact of surviving. As the world gets more competitive, I'm sure everyone (men & women) would want to get some security of their own.
That shouldn't be a problem. However, if one is really obsessed with earning money, so much so that is takes a toll on their health, then they should be alerted, and just take a step back to look at their current situation.
And please don't sterotype?
I don't think it's only the women who are obsessed with money, anyone, for the matter of fact, can be obsessed with money.

zaxraider's answer is actually true in a sense. It all comes down to propagating one's genes/DNA. From a DNA survival sense, mens' optimal approach is to spread their DNA far and wide. From a DNA survival sense, womens' optimal approach is to gather and keep resources to raise the children successfully. Women have much more biological resource invested in building a baby then men do.
Of course, there are social, philosophical, etc things that complicate this view some. Even from the DNA survival sense there are second and third-order things that make this simplistic view not completely accurate. However, is does describe some of the driving factors.

I do not want a guy for money. If other women do, they are missing out on a lot of decent honest guys.

Women like money so they can buy clothes shoes and dine out without having to go to work. Wouldn't you do that if you could?

Not just women either......
But lets face it, most people that say 'money can't buy happiness' are those that have it! And they wouldn't be too happy if they lost it!
