My boss is making me see a counselor once a week. She is also paying 2/3 of the bill for it. My counselor decided that under those circumstances that it would be fair to my boss if I signed a paper saying that she and my boss can discuss general things about my treatment. My counselor and my boss are both lying to me about what they are talking about. I know for a fact that they are discussing more than what they are telling me they are discussing. Can my counselor do that legally? Does she have to tell me everything that they talk about in regards to me? What should I do in y'alls opinion? Thanks for your help.

I know that my boss and my counselor are talking about more than they are letting on because my boss has talked about it to one of my co-workers who is telling me what she is saying!

that seems like a conflict of interest to me. u can't be honest w/ the therapist if u know she's talking to ur boss about it. don't sign the paper w/o knowing what ur rights are 1st. what goes on in the counselor's office should stay in the office.

Refuse to go to the counsel. Tell the counsel and boss why. You have no legal grounds since you signed a release of information. I would make sure that the counsel and boss know that the boss is repeating what the counsel tells her. Say you will only go back if the counsel signs a contract to never tell anyone what is said or discussed.

Don't sign anything. I'm not sure that it is appropriate for your counsellor to discuss you with your boss even though your boss is paying towards the sessions. It is definitely illegal for your boss to discuss you with another person and you have a good case for taking your boss to court over this. If I were you I would discuss the situation with a solicitor. You definitely need legal help for this.

OMG! First of all your boss can't "make" you see a counselor. Secondly, your counselor should not be discussing your sessions with your boss - who is then telling a co-worker. It's outrageous and possibly illegal.

If you signed a release of information, then the therapist can talk about anything they want. Yu can revoke that release of information and then your therapist cannot talk to your employer. You can also get a limited release of information allowing the therapist to only talk about certain things, like your attendence to appointments or length of treatment.

That's totally unethical. You have every right to refuse information to be released to your boss! If your therapist won't agree to this, you might consider reporting her (if she's a social worker, to NASW, for psychology, to the APA, etc).

Good luck. You deserve better treatment!

Why is your shrink telling your boss to begin with? It's none of their business, and yes... it's illegal, because its called doctor patient confidentiality.

never allow your boss to talk to your shrink. its not fair. if they talk without permission from you its a violation of your rights and you can sue for so much, you won't have to work for a long time.
