I think that with technology become ever-more present, people have been escaping into the supernatural.
Modern medicine is the best it has ever been. Life expectancy has risen dramatically with advances in infections first, then heart disease, now cancer. But more and more people use 'natural medicine', ranging from the poorly researched herb to the spiritual realm of acupuncture and muscle testing (to free the flow of spirit energy), homeopathy (where an ingredient is diluted so much that only the 'spirit' remains).
Christianity may be practiced less these days, but there are no shortage of psychics, astrologers, numerologists, tarot card readers. Jon Edwards, who claims to get vague and occasionally accurate messages from the dead, but can't seem to discern their names without assistance, is a regular on television. There are also regular TV series (mostly on cable) featuring 'ghost hunters'.
Despite the complete documenting of the human creation of crop circles, millions still believe in mysterious converging forces and alien intelligence sending us messages by bending wheat in a field. Try telling these people that crop circles are ALL made by humans. Every One. Their 'faith' shines right through.
Now, there are those of us that actually believe in modern thinking, and find the supernatural somewhat silly. But I think real critical thinking about science still escapes most of humanity, even those with cell phones, Ipods, and six-CD changers.

Interesting viewpoint- from the response i think there are a lot of people who agree with you.
But, consider this- statement such as yours- and others above me has put pressure on poeple to not speak up about the miracles that they witness. And to claim it is as a miracle only cast doubt on their sanity or at best their intelligence.
Can you truly say- with complete confidence that there is no supernatural? What we call science is indeed a wonderful thing- it has taken misunderstood physics and expalined it in a way to de-mystify it. This is great - for who would want to go around and calim that a magnet is magical - or supernatural. But to be so arrogant - or better - ignorant - to say there is no "being" that is greater than man.
I am not offended by others who point out that in the past there were scam artisits and schisters who tried to fool others - much as we have today. But to then throw out such miracle as bringing a person back from the dead after three days- (even today we cannot) not make the dumb speak - unles through some mechanical device. I caution you and others to consider the relm of possibilites out there before you simple scoff and dismiss somethig you obviously do not - can not understand.
I do take my experinces seriously - and I do not claim to understand them. But do not make the mistake of assuming that I am a mere fool or moron who mistakes swamp gas for some dis-embodied spirit.
Perhaps it is not the magic we have lost- but the faith.

wow that is so deep. I think there are def more aesthiests now than EVER before. Especially teens. I do feel like we are def leaving God behind, is this a sign of the end of the world? Just go on myspace, 1 out every 3 teens has aethist listed under religion. I was brought up to fear God, but I still drink and smoke etc... unmarried sex, things of that nature. I think maybe some of us will get a reality check soon.

There is no such thing as the supernatural, only aspects of the natural world that we do not (and perhaps never will) understand. I believe in God as the most rational explanation of the universe, but I have to admit that it is with extreme reluctance. On the other hand, I have seen ghosts and the evidence for the existence of telepathy and psychokinesis is so overwhelming that it is actually more superstitious NOT to believe in its existence than to believe that it is a reality. Magic is still out there in the world, in the rustling of a blade of grass, in the miracle of birth, in the wonder of a sunset, etc. It's all natural magic, though, not supernatural.

It is interesting to see this topic appearing at this time in history. One of the faster growing professional areas of practice comes under the heading of "parapsychology". With the interests being directed toward NDE, telepathy and many of the areas and levels of the mind either not understood or, feared by most.
Many are awakening to the study of the mind. Not the anatomical or functional aspect of the brain. More-so, the varying levels of the mind... aside from that studied under the label of psychology. Things people never take the time to gain the understanding of.

Disempowered? Nah. It used to be thought that Magnets were magic.
The force of magnets hasn't changed. Just the way we UNDERSTAND them.
Science explained how Magnets work, so we realize it's not " magic". I just think that Magic is the stuff that Science hasn't figured out how it works yet.
Protons aren't magic, but science hasn't really figured it all out.
Same with the Genetic code.
There's still lots of things that science can't explain, that doesn't mean that it's not real.

They have a very prominent role in my life, and in the lives of a number of people that I know. Admittely these people are pagans, but still....I do agree that a great many in the world have lost that sense of..oh...I suppose you could call it wonder...that peole used to have. part of that comes from the fact that there is this idea that science and religion are not only mutually exclusive, but antagonistic to one another. If you are a religious person you have to reject any scientific idea that doesn't fit in with your religious belief and if you are in science you have to put aside any religious idea. This is sad really...because not only are they complimentary to one another, they are BOTH necessary. I know this, and I know a few people that feelt he same way.

Ha!
Do you even need to ask?
Of course!
Most people still take religion very seriously and always will. This is because the common man is aware of something bookish academicians inexperienced with living will never be.
There is always something which cannot be explained away.
Be afraid. Be very afraid. You can't see what behind you, ready to take you away, and it will have you! Love. Justice. Truth. Death. It comes for us all, and all you books will be so much dust and ashes before it.

People do take religion too seriously it's O.K to have there own beliefs but we don't want it shoved down our throats.
I am quite interested in the supernatural I defiantly think there is something out there i also believe in life on other planets.
