Crossover cables are used to connect similar devices - PCs to other PCs without using a hub, or routers to routers etc. When you're connecting different devices like a PC to a switch/hub or router, you use a straight cable.

Keep in mind that on many switches/hubs, either the first or last port has a button next to it which you can push, that causes the port itself to behave as either a crossover or straight connection (eliminating the need for different cables)

This is very dependend on what you are trying to accomplish, in order to configure many routers you will need to either use a crossover cable or com port to access the router, especially if the system is down. For every day use or for accessing the iternet you would not use a crossover cable

Crossover is used to connect pc to pc. Normally you use straight cable to connect pc to hub or router.

Many newer Network Interface chips will set the connection right no matter which cable you use.
I am a reference because I work at a chip company in the Network department.
