A smile can hide a lot of sorrow and a tear a lot of joy.

actually i think people who are smiling alot might not be happy at all( when you do sth on the extreme level, it shows you are afraid of sth to be revealed and you are tryin to avoid or hide something) i know this girl who smiles alot and laughs and who is happy go and jolly..but i know deep down how sad and miserable she is. how unhappy she is. she is depressed. but if you didnt know her you would assume she is the happiest person in this world. People want to look strong and happy to other people so it doesnt give anyone any power over them and they are ashamed of what is going on with their lives. I think moderation is good. if you are happy smile but if you are sad it is ok to cry. It is not ok always to put on a act and a mask and try to run away from the reality because it will catch up with you and it will push you thru depression- holding feelings back is not a good idea..dont let things bottled up . and next time you know someone who always and always seems to be smiling and laughing( and i do wish they are doing it genuinly) do think that there might be sth bothering them

Some are really happy and some are hiding their unhappiness

This is PROVEN to be true... When you smile, whether you are happy, sad, angry, etc... You WILL become happy. So yes when someone is smiling, they are in fact happy.
P.S. Pocahontas... Everybody goes through tough times in their life... I hope you remember this person on your raindy days, because they will come, and that is when you need to smile the most.
May I suggest trying to be there for that person you know, if they are going through a tough time, having people who care helps.

Not necessarily, but its a possibility. I know quite a few people that smiled a lot even when they were sad or depressed, cos they didn't want anyone to know they were upset. Theres still people out there that do smile alot, just cos they can, or are naturally very happy. My dad's xgf smiled ALOT because she said it was healthy for you.

Some are probably happy, while others may be hiding a secret sorrow/worry. And, as Shakespeare put it:

"That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain:
At least I ’m sure it may be so in Denmark."
Hamlet. ACT I Scene 5.

Outward appearances may be deceptive - or they may not be.

There's a possibility that they could really be happy, but I've yet to meet someone who's really happy and always smiling.

Looks are deceiving.

"the eyes are the window to a person's soul". look through them and not only at their smile.

as to the "a lot" part, i think it is more on one's outlook in life...there is a difference between optimism and being happy. one does not usually equate to the other. but it is the former that we usually observe, thus it makes us wonder if such joy is really and truly possible. but you know what i noticed about optimism? it's contagious. and it is in many ways, good for the soul. i have friends who are optimists, and their zest in life sometimes just brings me up when the world seems to prove otherwise.
