Where I live, a couple of years ago the police went round checking cars parked in the town or on the estates against computer records. All untaxed or uninsured cars were first clamped, then (as the recovery vehicles got around to it) impounded and not returned until the situation was regularised - including fines and the expense of the whole operation. They occasionally check up now, but the word is that they don't find much trade: the bad boys have got the mesage and insure their cars properly: it's cheaper. Bradford police, please note.
