The length of a rectangle playing field is 5 ft less than twice its width. If the perimeter of the playing field is 230 ft, find the length and the width of the field.

230 = 2(2w - 5) + 2w
230 = 4w - 10 + 2w
230 = 6w - 10
240 = 6w
w = 40 ft
l = 2(40)-5 = 75 ft.

2.) Distance = velocity * time
dm = vm * t
dj = vj * (t-2) since he starts 2 hours later

Since we're finding when John catches up with Martina, dm = dj, so:
vm * t = vj * (t-2)
25t = 48 (t-2)
25t = 48t - 96
96 = 23t
t = 4.17 hours
.17 hour = 10 minutes
4 hr + 10 min + 9am = 1:10 pm

3.) f + p = 850 (number of trees)
300f + 225p = 217,500 (cost of trees)

Step 1: Find p in relation to f (or vice versa)
p = 850 - f

Step 2: Substitute your value of p for p.
300f + 225p = 217,500
300f + 225(850-f) = 217,500
300f - 225f + 191250= 217,500
75f = 26,250
f = 350
p = 850 - f = 850 - 350 = 500 (solution)
