I agree that if you are old enough to die for your country, you are old enough to have a beer first.
One thing you might remember, however, is that 35 years ago you not only wouldn't have been able to enjoy a beer, but you wouldn't have had any CHOICE about joining the military service, and you would not have been allowed to vote.
Being drafted, then not even being allowed to vote out the cretins who sent you over to whatever godforsaken jungle they were invading that week made the inequity of not being able to get a beer seem much less important.
Be safe

Nope. If you are stationed someplace where the drinking age is 18 or lower, then partake in a beer. Until then, as a military member, it's your duty to abide by the laws of this country. Reports have shown that a higher drinking age reduced the number of drunk driving accidents and fatalities along with many other issues. While *you* may be responsible enough to handle your alcohol, many others can't. Sorry!

because a group called MADD decided that 18 was too young to drive and thought pushing its agenda of the legal drinking age would bring down youth drunk driving deaths, since they wouldn't be drinking? right... this was in the 1980s, when the law passed, it was a state to state thing, and who enforced it? NO ONE... not one state, some states had laws at 18, some had no laws, one or two had it at 21, meaning you could cross state borders and drink... so, the federal government pressured the states by telling them that if they didn't raise the drinking age, they wouldn't receive federal funding for highways, every state complied except Louisiana until 1997, when Louisiana eventually changed its age as well, and got the federal funding for highways and interestates and ****.
Of course, in the years since the maximum age reached 21, drunk driving deaths have no gone down at all... because it was never the underaged kids who were doing the drunk driving. Anyway, they're trying to get support to drop it down to age 18 again, but the MADD lobby is too powerful.
Oh well... hey, in some countries, alcohol is banned.

One of those things, I guess. The good news is this: When they're outside the U.S., military regulations allow all military members 18 and over to drink. So, join the Navy and see the world!

Personally, I agree with you.
However, as a serviceman, it is important to provide not only protection to your country, but a role model for others to follow. Even though on a personal level you really SHOULD be able to drink, you gotta think about the civilian 18 year olds who aren't allowed to. They will look up to you for obeying your country's law.

I think if they are sent to any area that is a threat - they should pack them up with a keg! I would personally pay for it! They deserve to be able to do whatever they want. What if they never make it to 21?
