I would prefer to dress as something cute and he doesn't care. He says he'll do whatever. We are now leaning toward alice in wonderland and the mad hatter.....is that dumb? any other suggestions?

Do a ventriloquist skit...
One of you make little legs/pants, and attach at the waist. Then, wear black actual pants. When you get somewhere, the "dummy" will put his legs over the ventriloquists knee, so it appears he/she is sitting there.
Work out the details from there... man/woman, father/child, etc. There are lots of possibilities...

Alice is OK.
I made a costume one time for my friend who's boyfriend was a fireman. She wore a red bodysuit and I glued red, yellow and orange tissue and cellophane (cut into flame shapes) all over it. It was a fantastic costume and the best part was that when she walked she sounded like crackling flames because of all the paper/plastic. Her boyfriend wore his fireman yellows and helmet. They won 1st prize!
