'Rubber' is the popular word used for the rubber-made eraser(for pencils). It actually means something used for rubbing. Eraser, on the other hand, means something used to erase. Mind it, your disk cleaner or virus cleaner utility is also an eraser.
The loofah you use for bathing is a rubber while the face lotion is an eraser.

A rubber rubs out and leaves a horrible mess but an eraser totally erases what you wrote and it can't be read anymore. That's the theory anyway.

Rubber is the natural substance (tree sap)used in industry
for manufacturing all kinds of goods from boots to tyres.
An eraser is not necessarily made of rubber (used to be
in the past) and is used to erase pencil writing/drawings
off paper

Nothing.
Some people call it a rubber cos it's made out of rubber and others call it an eraser cos it erases things.
I prefer rubber myself

Rubber is a UK term for an eraser. In the US, a rubber is a condom!

English, Austrailian and New Zealand folks say "rubber". Its only the Americans who say eraser.
I am the wrong person to answer this question as I just read an "Americanised" version of Harry Potter and they have changed it all into American English: Harry's fringe is referred to as bangs!!!!
I'd love to know what the Americanised Shakespeare sound like!
That is just one example, but we don't have our books changed into American English!!
We are smart enough to know that "color" and "colour" are the same thing. But I fear Americans are too dumb: otherwise why change the original text?!

Depends what 'class' of person you are. 'Eraser' is thr proper description of that thing that rubs out pencil marks. Also, you can't use an eraser as a condom
