I was an Army Officer.

It depends upon your M.O.S. (specialty) whether you will like it or not.

As always, I would recommend the R.O.T.C. program in college or the OCS program.

If you plan on becoming a "lifer" in the service, please be aware that the world is NOT going to bow at your feet and jobs become available when u get out...just because you are a Vet.

...just the reality.

Consider going into any MOS which can be easily transferrable into the "real world" as we used to call it.

I saw many a' troops who were in MOS' that could not be easily transferred. Do u see many job civilian job openings for snipers or Infantry Rangers?

Uh...no!

Then again...I haven't read the classifieds in Soldier of Fortune Magazine lately.

:-)

While you are in...get as much college education paid for as possible...as fast as possible.

I loved the Army and learned a lot.

2nd I.D.
Second 2 None!

Lastly, Korea is one of the Army's best kept secret!

:-)

I'm not in the military but my boyfriend is and I have lots of friends who are. I also worked on base for over a year and a half. My suggestion...join the Air Force. My best friend joined the Army, even after she was encouraged to join the Air Force and she didn't. About a year into it she wished she had joined the AF. The Air Force is just more "people oriented".
What are you looking at doing in the military? If you're looking at traveling a lot then the Air Force is good for that too. My boyfriend has been to every continent except Antarctica, and he's been everywhere like 10 times. He's had the greatest experience, I'm jealous of all he's accomplished already. Nevermind he can retire at 37 because he joined so young.
No matter what branch of the military you join, I applaud you. Our military is so under appreciated and they do SO much for us, more than more realize. They give up so much, and so do their families, all for the betterment of our country. No matter what you do, remember that =)

I've never personally served, but I've grown up in a military family on both sides of the tree.

My mother's father was a retired Italian Colonel who left the service after Mussolini failed his people in WWII.

And my father's father was a U.S. Army Drill Sgt.

Plus a lot of Navy and Marine's in there as well.

Do I respect the military? Quite a bit, I've seen what they go through on a regular basis.

Are there better things to do with your life? Certainly.

Will they make you a man's man though? Probably not. The military will.

I am a West Point grad and a disabled vet from another era.

I think the military is a great choice whether it be for a short time or a career. My younger brother graduated from Annapolis, The US Naval Academy and made a career of the Navy.

The military is a good life.

I come from a military family. I am not in the military myself. In general, it's a pretty decent lifestyle. If you are joining the Army, prepare to be sent to Iraq. If you do not desire to be in land combat, I suggest you join the Navy.

I am not in the military myself, but my father, my step-father, two of my brothers, my husband and my son are or were all in the military. I loved being a military dependent. Moving every few years, traveling, and a steady assured paycheck every two weeks. I think you have to have the right mentality, because you have to give up a lot to have a military career, however you are paid back tenfold by the life experiences you receive.
My son just finished Army boot camp two weeks ago, and he said it wasn't unbearable, and he seems very happy. Go for it if you enjoy travel, making lifelong friends and serving your country. Best of luck to you ... and a heartfelt "Thanks for protecting the US" in advance.
