help me with a problem? I have a 1994 P-30 motor home thas has become difficult to shift. I have disconnected the shift cable from the auto trans. and the column shift lever is still very stiff. That tells me the problem lies either in the cable or the column. Have any of you ace machanics seen this before? If the problem is in the column, what is the fix?

Remove the cable from the shift arm at the bottom of the column. Does it move very stiffly? It can be freed up by lubricating it with a good lubricant (NOT WD-40) such as Syntech, or P.B.Blaster or some other GOOD quality lube.
If you remove the cable and the shift lever is still stiff, it will require the break-down of the shifter bowl and tub that is contained in the column. It isn't difficult, but it can be a pain accommodating the tilt and turn-signal and steering wheel lock mechanisms.
You may want to take the column out (only 5 bolts and the electrical plugs) and take it to your favorite repair facility or to a Chevrolet or GMC dealer.

Good Luck

I am guessing that the column is a tilt column -- you probably have kinked the shift cable which is what is causing the "stiff" feeling. Tilt columns are very nice to have but after excessive use, they do tend to cause wear and tear on the cables and wiring within the column.
