Gentle and Sensitive are great qualities to have. Don't change yourself. Maybe what you're looking for is how to be more assertive or be able to say NO when you really want to.

I am very much like you, especially with non-immediate relatives. I want to not make waves, because I've seen what happens to families in conflict. I have done two things that really help me, and you can give it a whirl, if they sound good to you. Number one, after you have identified what qualities are so negative to you, keep your distance as much as possible. Try to imagine they are sick, and you don't want to get their germs. Return phone calls, but be very brief. Go to the meetings or gatherings, but only stay as long as you have to, and don't sit near them. Spend time with the people who lift you up, instead of the negative ones. Sometimes the only way to deal with them is to tell them what behavior is so offensive, and ask them to be more considerate. sometimes, they need to be cut out of your life. Number two, realize that your weaknesses are also gifts, as you are no doubt compassionate and helpful. You cannot be unbreakable, and you wouldn't want to be like that. You have to embrace your true self.

It's good to be gentle and sensitive, but there are people who will take advantage of that if they can. Sometimes a person must be able to draw the line. There are times when you should be able to put aside gentleness in favor of self preservation. If what you need is to get tough once in a while, it may be necessary, in order to gain a healthy respect from your peers, or those who seek to take advantage of your nature. Show them that there is another side to you and you refuse to take any sh**.
Good Luck

Its not a weakness. Its just a personality trait. Try and use it to your advantage, there are loads of careers that really value sensitivity and the ability to read others feelings etc. Its also a great trait to have in a friend/partner as they tend to be supportive and understanding.

I have the same problem...working on self esteem might be a good idea...I'm reading a great book right now called "The Six Pillars of Self Esteem". It has changed my life...I definitely recommend it.

Don't change your sensitivity, just realize your strengths.
