The saying is meant for for emotional things. If you go through a difficult situation you will learn from it and become a better stronger person because of it (hopefully)! I suppose the same could be for a physical trauma as well. If you get hit by a train and don't die hopefully you'll be mentally stronger and figure out how to get the hell out of the way of a moving train!

Well, think of it this way. If you got hit by a train but weren't killed, you could very well be disabled for life. If you over time learned to cope with your disability and at the same time found reason for hope despite your situation, you would have been 'made stronger' in that you would have overcome a serious disadvantage and were resilient at least in a psychological sense if not a physical sense.

Hello Kar,
GOOD POINT. Even emotional problems can't possibly always make you stronger. They can make you harder or more wary. Um i suppose being less gullible is kind of stronger though. Becoming so hard that you no longer care isn't stronger though, and i have come across people hardend in this way.
I don't really trust what Nietzsche said because he was a bit of a nutter innit.

If you were unfortunate enough to be hit by a train and lived then it hasn't killed you but (and this is where it gets tricky) if you have the presence of mind and strength of character to get yourself back to the 'old' you and are once again fighting fit then this proves that it is character building and makes you stronger!
It mainly refers to inner strength like thinking positive and mental stability, plus you would 'usually' become a lot wiser when it comes to approaching trains!

It's meant to be a comfort to those who have gone through some emotional loss, it is supposed to make you realise that the loss is not the end of the world and that though you feel like it's the worst time of your life you will get over it and because you get over it its proof that you coped and dealt with it and so when you come out the other side and life is brighter you are are stronger person because you did'nt let it ruin your life.

They don't mean it in the physical sense. They mean it in a mental, emotional or psychological sense.
The train accident (or whatever difficult event) would become the new mental reference point in your life to which all other struggles are measured. After a train accident, those other problems don't look so bad. Therefore, you're stronger and better to cope with them.

It's for once you heal and get better.
You can look back and say "I got hit by a train and lived".
It would make a lot of the obstacles that arise seem like nothing. It would make your mind stronger, your force of will.
Of course, this is assuming you don't have any brain damage.:)

As far as i recall it is a paraphrasing of a Friedrich Nietzsche quote from his book 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' wherein Nietzsche talks about his idea of 'the superman', a being who has overcome his human restrictions. therefore what he is talking about is not necessarily physical strength or ability but a mental and emotional strength. If you were hit by a train but didn't die, although you would probably be physically weaker you would have evaded death, a great achievement! basically your experience of something horrendous, provided you survive it, can forearm you against similar or lesser future catastrophes

I couldn't read through all the other replies b/c you got a ton =oP But this is how i look at it...
If you are going through something tragic and you let it kill you - you let it overcome you - in a sense you've died... you've let it take over your life. But to be able to work through something genuinly difficult means that you've learned how to deal with it. You've learned and you've overcome. It's made you stronger. If it were ever to happen again - you'd know what you were dealing with and how to handle it. You'd also be able to help others if they were to go through the same situation.

Some would argue that because you survived being hit by a train, then as a whole you would be stronger to deal with everyday trials and tribulations with ease.
