Who calls him great?

Because the robbery he took part in was called The Great Train Robbery.

The robbery took place Bridego Railway Bridge, Ledburn near Mentmore in Buckinghamshire, England on 8th August 1963. At the time it was one of the largest robreries of all time in the UK with £2.3million being stolen (which equates to £40million or $74million in today's terms).

All 15 members of the gang are known as "Great Train Robbers", not because they were "great" as in "good at it" but because the robbery was "great" in terms of the large sum of money involved.

He didn't get caught until years later, having lived a life of a free man for most of his life. You're right, it doesn't make him great. Just dickless like all criminals
