Please forget about all the tourist places in North Beach listed above and below. And Buca di Beppo isn't Italian, it's an American chain.

The best place in the Bay Area for excellent, authentic Italian cuisine is Oliveto in Rockridge, hands down. It's pricey, but worth every penny for one of the best culinary experiences you will ever have in your life. The chef actually goes to Tuscany every year to bring back fresh truffles and other treasures he hunts himself.

For less pricey fare within the city, I can highly recommend either Pazzia in SoMa or Antica Trattoria on Russian Hill.

Buon appetito!

Riviera in Santa Rosa, about 55 miles North of S.F. has the best Italian food. It's run by two brothers, their Sister, and a couple of very good prep cooks. Awesome food; O.K. prices; and wonderful Sonoma County reds.

Ummmm...

San Remos in San Carlos on San Carlos ave. But, if you like chinese go to King Chaun also on Sna Carlos Ave. or Amazing Wok on Laurel Street. More italian would be togos on redwood city nad belmont at the safeway shopping place or speedaria in san carlos on laurel . There you can get a 5 dollar special (2 slices and a soda free refills)

San Remos in San Carlos is really, really good. Steps of Rome in the city is really good. If you tell people WHERE in the bay you are it may help narrow this down... i mean, if you are in SF, i wouldn't suggest for you to drive down to San Remos or anything, lol....
