I am buying a home and would like to renovate the large bathroom to include a wall mounted urinal for several reasons. First because my house seems to be the congregating are for the family we have high traffic. Secondly because I want to save money on water. And thirdly because set at the right height I'm hoping will eliminate some of the mess that we have here (My husband doesn't put on his glasses when he goes pee in the morning...Enough said.) due to the much shorter toilet. Also, it seems like we both always have to use the bathroom at the same time and it wouldn't look cool for us to have two toilets in one bathroom and I don't feel like adding another. My Dad is a plumber and would do the installation for free...

So the question is...

Does a urinal save money in the long run on water? How hard are they to clean? Some people say the stink...Is this true?

Also, any other information would be useful too...

P.S. I'm a girl so I don't have much knowledge of urinals...That's why I'm asking. Thanks

Urinals in residential homes are becoming more popular. If they are kept clean they don't smell. Plus, it will totally eliminate any splatter from your husband's early morning near sighted adventures. Additionally, you don't really need to worry whether its difficult to clean or not, since its a fixture exclusively for him, your husband should clean it. As for the question of water pressure posed by the previous guy, I'd suggest you ask your father the plumber that question. He'll know for sure. Finally, it would solve your two at a time issue.

I've heard that they do use a lot less water, but I never saw any reports about whether you would save enough water to cover the cost of the urinal and installation. It does seem that the toilet is flushed more times per day for urination than for solid waste, so eventually the water savings would add up to cover the cost.

You can do it with taste- they make wall mounted ones that do not go the whole way to the floor- I think they are cool. Kohler and Steward make waterless ones- so there is some savings- however they usually cost like $300-$500.

The ones that usually go to the floor are the ones that smell- usually because they are in public and have those "cakes" in them that really don't cover the scent of urine at all. If you both have your own place to relieve yourself in make your man clean his! I know there is nothing like sitting down with the lid up. I don't think it would devalue your home.

Check out the site below- 2 pages of different styles- I like the waterless ones on the second page for a more modern "clean" look! Good Luck!

i'm not certain, but i do believe you are right about urinals conserving water and i'm sure they are easy enough to clean. i think the stink issue is people associating them with those gross "urinal cakes" they put in the urinals in public restrooms. in my opinion, those smell far worse than piss (i know this from my glory days working in a fast food restaurant when i was 16 and had to clean the restrooms).

one thing to keep in mind though, is the imapct this will have on the resale value of your house. i for one would be very put off by a urinal in the bathroom and would have hesitations. but, i suppose it is your house and you should make it work for you, not for the future owners.

Here's the thing; women, and I'm including my wife in this, complain about mens erratic aim but don't like the solution, the urinal, so men acquiesce and use the toilet, which is also designed for the womans comfort and have to listen to the complaining about their aim for the entirety of their married life. I know a man or two who to satisfy their female partner sit on the toilet to pee, but as all men know, that doesn't empty the bladder as well as standing. Gravity, you know. It just goes to show how far men go to please women who aren't pleased anyway. I'm putting a urinal in our house and will have to live with only half of my wifes unhappiness.

That sounds like a great idea. AS far as I know they are only hard to clean if people put things in there that don't belong like gum or cigarette butts. They make deodorizers for them ( the big white mint you may have heard of) which seems to help with the smell. Also, there is a plastic or rubber thing that is kinda like a strainer. That would help keep things like gum and cigarette butts out.

Maybe you could go into a men's room somewhere and check it out.

I can't say if you should have one installed or not but I can tell you about cleaning since I clean schools for a living. They are easy to clean, easier than toilets IMO, and as long as they are flushed after each use they don't stink.
