because no one listens to those signs. People are just in too much of a rush to get place to place, there not going to drive slower for a chipmunk. People know that chipmunks cross the street. Does there HAVE to be human crossing signs? Or squirrels? Or maybe even crickets?

Chipmonks generally don't cross open areas like roads because it leaves them unprotected from pretitors like hawks, they tend to stick to the grasses, bushes, or trees. A sign stating the chipmonks were in the area would warn drivers, but chipmonks are small, maybe 6" at most full grown and that would be large for one, very hard to see and avoid, if you did avoid one you either have very good eye site, were driving slow, or are a very tentitive driver, any of those ways good for you. Deer crossing signs on the other hand state that there are deer in the area and that they are known for crossing in that area, its a warning so you don't hit them, not for the deer's safty and more for yours, a chipmonk wont do much damage if any to your car, large animals on the other hand could cause a major accendent.

Boy, I have hit a couple of squirrels in my life and simply hate it. Unlike cats and other critters the squirrels and chipmunks go to the center of the road and then will go any old way and you can never predict which way it will be in time to avoid them. Most animals "cross" the road so it is easier to avoid them.

Thanks for missing the little guy, so many people would just run over the little creatures and think it's funny. Chipmunks are very sweet little beings and don't hurt anything.

good ques.... And how do the deer know how to cross at the deer crossing signs. if they can read then why not just go to the corner and push the button for the "walk" light to come on?
