Depends upon the store's policy. Always ask BEFORE you buy something what their return policy is.
Most states offer a 7 to 15 day trail period on cell phones. Check the laws of your state. For regular electronics, it is up to the store. You bought it so it is yours. If it is defective then the manufacturer probably offers a warranty, but there is no law that you have the right to return anything you are displeased with. It is purely up to the store how they wish to treat their customers.

yes , you can demand a refund. As long as the item is in the same condition , as when you bought and you have a receipt. These shops are always told to give out credit notes as a first option.Kick up a little bit when there are other people in the shop and demand to see the manager....then the attitude might change a little. You have your rights ,you know.If you still get no joy, report them to the trading standards.good luck.

You can always threaten to call the better business bureau. Even if they are in the right and win it leaves a black mark on their record because they have been investigated. Most businesses don't want that black mark and will refund your money rather then put up with the hassle. Good Luck.

If you have the sales receipt, SCREAM LOUDER!
If no receipt, no refund. It could be stolen.
