Before I start, it's important to understand first that character is not the same thing as reputation. Character is what you are. Reputation is what people say you are. Abraham Lincoln likened character to a tree and reputation to its shadow.
With these in mind, remember 2 things:
*A character quality is a habit that you can develop through repeated practice
*Good character contributes to success.
With this understanding in mind, you can help building character by employing the following Six Pillars of Characters:
1.Trustworthiness
-Be honest
-Don't deceive, cheat or steal
-Be reliable — do what you say you'll do (promise-keeping)
-Have the courage to do the right thing
-Build a good reputation
-Be loyal — stand by your family, friends and country
2. Respect
-Treat others with respect; Follow the Golden Rule, "Don't do unto others what you would want others do unto you/"
-Be tolerant of differences
-Use good manners, not bad language
-Be considerate of the feelings of others
-Don't threaten, hit or hurt anyone
-Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements.
3. Responsibility
-Do what you are supposed to do
-Persevere: Keep on trying!
-Always do your best
-Use self-control
-Be self-disciplined
-Think before you act — and consider the consequences of your actions
-Be accountable for your choices
4. Fairness
-Play by the rules
-Take turns and share
-Be open-minded, listen to others
-Don't take advantage of others
-Don't blame others carelessly
5. Caring
-Be kind
-Be compassionate and show you care
-Express gratitude
-Forgive others
-Help people in need
6. Citizenship
-Do your share to make your school and community better
-Cooperate
-Get involved in community affairs
-Stay informed, vote
-Be a good neighbor
-Obey laws and rules
-Respect authority
-Protect the environment
Lastly, let me leave you these words to ponder on being the person you want to be:
"Character is knowing the good,
Loving the good and doing the good. "
(Thomas Lickona)
"Character is what you are in the dark."
(Rev. Dwight Moody)

Through life experiences. Yes, I would have to say I agree with what you just said about suffering. If life is all fun and no difficult times we do not learn from our experiences. It is through trials that we develop the ability to deal with more, we learn who we truly are.

NO, NOT SUFFERING. THAT IS SELF-RIGHTEOUS.
YOU DEVELOP CHARACTER BY HOW YOU HANDLE CRISIS. WHEN YOU CAN MAINTAIN YOUR PRINCIPLES YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE BY AND ADAPT TO YOUR SITUATION, YOUR CHARACTER IS STRENGTHENED.
IF YOUR CHARACTER IS WEAK, YOU WILL LET SITUATIONS CHANGE WHO YOU ARE. AN EXAMPLE WOULD BE ACTING OUT OF SPITE WHEN YOU ARE INSULTED, SAYING OR DOING THINGS TO GET BACK AT THE INSULTOR. AN EXAMPLE OF CHARACTER STRENGTH WOULD BE RISING ABOVE YOUR SPITEFUL FEELINGS, TAKING THE HIGH ROAD, AND NOT RESPONDING TO THE INSULTOR.

You can improve your character by becoming clear on your moral code, (for example, the Ten Commandments), and then live by it consistently, whether anyone knows you do or not, whether it's easy or difficult to do so.
