Actually, pumping gas is a lost art as all gasoline systems now use a electric pump to flow the fluid from underground storage to the nozzle that is inserted into the vehicle or container.

Hand transfer pumps are used to move the liquid from one vat into another.

The old gasoline stations that had the five gallon glass containers above the stand and then allowed gravity flow to push the liquid into your car's tank are long gone. They had a hand pump attached to the stand that allowed you to pump the gas up so you could see that you were getting "full measure" for your money.

Is this a serious question??? I didn't think there were actually people out there that don't know how to pump their own gas except maybe Paris Hilton...lol. Yes I know how to pump my own gas but I go to the service station where they pump it for you so I don't have to drag my small children in and out of the car.

I do. But we don't have full service stations where I'm from. In Utah all I have seen are self serve. So you have to pump your own gas. Well there was one place that would do it for you but it was over a dollar more a gallon than any other gas station. I would just prefer to do it myself. It's not that big of an inconvienience.

It was really kind of scary the first time I actually did pump it myself, I was worried I would not know how and it would spill everywhere. Nope it was fine. been independent little cuss ever since. when it comes to pumping gas that is.

I'm not sure of your question? You said you do know how to. Are you just asking how many people know how to pump gas? Well, in California and most other states we pump our own gas. I do know in Oregon they won't let you pump your own gas.

you don't actually pump any gas, you just insert the nozzle into your tank and pull the lever towards you. Actual pumping was when the gas had to be manually pumped up from their storage tank by someone, nowadays this is all done using electric pumps.
