And who in Washington represents the rest of the nation?

Jane I believe it really goes farther than your statement. The beliefs in America are widely diverse. I am a capitalist, I believe in the free market system and in most instances I side with repubs, but on many other issues I side with the dems. Considering that the dems have made capitalism a target however, I am forced more often than not to vote for a repub. If the dems would go back about 50 years and stand up against socialism I think they would see a huge shift in the voting of Americans.

As far as washington goes, congress is full of corrupt career politicians who only represent themselves and the big money that bought them before they were elected. It really is criminal.

Socialist money goes to dems and capitalist money goes to repubs, so I think you can see why there is a widening divide. The dems have pandered to the marxist leftists and it has cost them election after election. Until they kick out the socialists they will continue to turn off America.

I find it really humorous when the socialists rant and rave about big oil owning the government. Go look at the big money, see where it comes from and where it goes. For dems to say the repubs are for big money is the ultimate hypocrisy.

There are more than two parties, but the Democrats and republicans have such a strangle hold on power and the political special interests and corporate donations essential for running for national office that its easy to think of the others as fringe or vanity parties.

The Libertarian party is gaining more momentum every year. And Ross Perot showed people that a third party candidate could be someone other than Ralph Nader or Pat Paulsen.

There are several parties in America, including Green, Libertarian, and Independent. There are some Independents in Washington (I assume you mean Congress), but very few representing the other parties. And by the way, the Independent party is an actual political party, it's not the same thing as saying you have no political affiliation.

Though I'm not a conservative, I feel compelled to say that is not one or the other. There are plenty of third parties, despite the attempts of the two leading parties to share a political monopoly in Washington. The Green Party and Reform Party are both growing rapidly. Even the Socialist Action Party is growing swiftly. Here's another party:

No. Some are Socialists, Communists and Independants. Interestingly, the Communist Party USA, who usually run their own candidate for President every election, choose to forgoe that practise in 2004, and threw their support behind Kerry. Guess they felt they owed him for all of his efforts on their behalf during Vietnam, and in Congress over the years.

There are plenty who call themselves Independents, but even most of them will tend to lean toward and vote for one of the two parties the majority of the time.
