Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) born on the 23rd October 1940. 1956 - 1974 Santos fc played 605 games scored 589 goals. 1975 - 1977 New York Cosmos played 64 games scored 37 goals. 1956 - 1971 Brazil played 92 games and scored 77 goals. The number of Goals that Pele is credited with scoring for Santos & New York Cosmos is controversial, Many of his 1000+ goals came in friendly games, which in Europe would not count towards a Players professional record. Some of these goals were scored for Army Teams when he was doing his National Service, others were scored for Representive Teams. Pele actually scored approximately 670 Goals in competitive Club Matches, and approximately 540 in League Games.

Yes it was the great Pele. He had a great strike ratio to games played and scored in excess of a thousand goals at every level of the game and was never sent off in his career, but unfortunately, then the means of gathering stats were not as thorough as it is today (so you cannot verify a lot of the goals a player claims to have scored). Also today also the game is more technical (managers use computer programs like Prozone) and the defenders meaner and a lot of top players spend most of their careers in other countries where the style is different and it tougher so you cannot exactly compare.

Well, from a question you posted before, it claimed penalties don't count as much as goals scored from open play. Messi had 17 penalties and scored 14 Why tonight? Because of his two penalties? Plus Muller did it in 49 games, Messi is number 57!
