Sydney Central Hostel. Great place...central, cheap, clean and right across from the bus station and a subway stop. Has a pool, BBQ area, cafe, game room, travel agency, internet access, great kitchen, etc.

I stayed in the Stellar Hotel last year and it was fantastic. It was about a 5 minute walk from the train and bus terminals, right on the corner of hyde park and oxford street.
It was very clean, with private bathroom and not far from anything. URL is at the bottom, but if you search or ring direct you can get better prices. I stayed for $98 per night.

it's been 10 yrs since my last visit to Sydney but I remembered that I stayed at this apartment hotel downtown called Waldorf's. Great location, very clean, spacious and comfortable, affordable. Google it, they should have a website.
