Copied from it's very good wiki:

Amp'd Mobile is a mobile phone service launched in the United States in late 2005 and is targeted at 18-35 year old's. The company is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator and operates on the Verizon Wireless CDMA EV-DO network. Because the Amp'd Live service works on Verizon's EV-DO network, the content is not available on the more wide-spread 1x parts of the national network. This was not mentioned by Amp'd initially. But after some complaints a disclaimer was added to their home page. This EV-DO limitation is one put into effect by Verizon for their VCast service.
