Either Nora Roberts or Janet Evanovich. Nora gets you so involved in the characters lives that you cannot put down her books. Janet has a series that has you waiting until the next one is published.

I have several, actually so many it's difficult to list all of them.

Books that got me through my youth and helped me grow up:

Madeline L'engle - Wrinkle in Time and the sequels
Robert Heinlein - his juveniles helped shape my sense of ethics
C.S. Lewis - The Narnia books

Books that keep me from despairing:
Charles de Lint - especially his Newford stories
Spider Robinson

Books that are just fun:
Almost anything by Neal Barrett Jr
Brad Denton
Julie Kenner's Carpe Demon
JD Robb's Eve Dallas books
MZ Bradley's Darkover
Anne McCaffrey's Dragon books
Katharine Eliska Kimbriel's Allie books - Night Calls and Kindred Rites
Tim Powers
Carol Nelson Douglas - her Midnight Louies and the Irene Adler books
Lois McMaster Bujold
C.J. Cherryh
Selina Rosen
Elizabeth Peters - the Amelia Peabody books

I could go on and on. Try some of these and see what you think.

Well, if you define 'favorite author' as the author I have the most books by, that would probably be Piers Anthony. I have books 1-27 of his Xanth series, plus all seven of The Incarnations of Immortality series, also have his Phaze books (7 of those as well) and the Mode series (3), as well as a single book called Killobyte. There's just something about his sense of humor that makes me keep on reading his books.

For comedy I'd go for P.G. Wodehouse - he's just great!!!
For something more deep and profound, I recommend Jeanette Winterson - I am sure you'd love her books!
Detective stories - Agata Cristie is the best!!!
Hope you like them!
