I just read somewhere that their illegal to own as a pet in california... why is that? They don't look like they could kill off native animals like a ferret can...so why?

(and nothing bad ment towards ferrets... I actually adore them)

hedgehogs and sugar gliders are illegal in california because they are exotics and it is "unknown" what kind of damage they might do to the environment if released to reproduce and live in the wild. I think state officials are just lazy, if they did any research whatsoever, neither of these animals could possibly survive for long, much less reproduce at a rate that could be harmful...

California is funny about their exotic animals. If you purchase one out of state and bring one in you will probably be able to still take it to the vet if you need to. You should look into your local vet first and see how they are about these semi-exotic animals. One of the issues is that they don't want the animals go get out and start breeding in the wild and fight with the natural species, but with all the feral cats they probably wouldn't last very long anyway.

same reason as a lot of animals and fish are illegal in plenty of states (especially here in Florida), because they can live there and may take over a certain niche that a native species needs to survive.

Yoiu cannot own or keep hedgehogs in California
because they eat whales. And, whales are, as you
well know, are a protected species.
