You are correct to steer clear of the color white. However, the rule you heard regarding black is absolutely not true. Evening weddings are a fun way to play with color. Because this wedding is in the fall, I might suggest sticking with rich, warm hues that are very "in" right now. Think deep reds, rust, brown, navy, (black will, of course, always work). Perhaps this season's most popular hue is deep purple--a purple you might consider a plum or eggplant. If you are on a budget, the following sites have great dresses and are nicely priced. Good luck being creative!

Wearing black to a wedding ceremony is OK, but remember, in our American culture, black is the traditional color of mourning. Weddings are happy occasions! I would wear a color other than black to the wedding ceremony.

I, personally, think that red is too loud of a color to wear to a wedding,Red is an attention-getting color and should only be worn when attention should be paid to the wearer. Clothes that are worn in places of worship, where most wedding ceremonies are held, should be modest, out of respect for the institution. In other words, don’t wear a low cut, thigh high, skin-tight dress to the place where the wedding takes place. This should help for what time/day it is and the formallity of it:

Informal Daytime: Short dress or suit (business attire OK for morning weddings)

Informal Evening: Cocktail dress

Semi-Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit

Semi-formal Evening: Cocktail dress

Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit. Hats and gloves optional.

Formal Evening or Black-Tie: Long or dressy short cocktail (beading, glam accessories, wrap)

Ultra-formal or White Tie: Long gown, extra glitz (furs, diamonds, etc.)

Do's and Dont's!!!!!

Don't wear white because it competes with the bride. There are plenty of other colors available.

Don't wear black or sequins during the daytime.

Don't worry about wearing the same colors as the bridesmaids or mothers. You can't possibly coordinate with everyone in the wedding party.

Do wear something feminine and appropriate, out of respect for your hosts. Clubwear, overtly sexy clothing (strapless, see-through, etc) doesn't belong at a wedding. If you have to ask if it's appropriate, it probably isn't.

Don't wear opera-length gloves (to top of arm) with anything but sleeveless or strapless gowns.

Do take off gloves to eat or drink.

Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn't specify the formality of the event. A pastel suit or soft floral dress for daytime or a little black dress for evening (after 6 p.m.) will take you almost anywhere.

Hope this helped and have a great time!!!

I know nothing over the top, since all attention should be on the bride( i'm 22 as well and going to four MORE wedding in the next two months!!!). In Oct, I'm wearing somehting longer, to look apprioprate, fancy, and importantly to keep warm! There are many sites on how to dress for a wedding!

You don't need to wear black. Eberyone at the party is going to wear black. You want to stand out wear a nice dark blue dress or hot red. Think about wearing a hot dress that everyone will look at you and say dam thats hot. Make sure you go get your make up done and have your hair straight or you can also get your hair done. When i go to a wedding i wear something very hot and get my make-up done at mac so i can look even hotter. well just try and look for a hot and sexy dress.

hello love, well i would say that since we are into the fall season, that gong with any shade of tan, brown, pinks, mauve, hints of green, any of the above would do well, i have been to many weddings in the fall, they are my favorate because you look so well in colors that compliment the changing of seasons, also i would try going to macys because they have a huge line of dresses and suit sets that are more than affordable and look great, i have gooton many dreeses at the deb shop as well, and another thing to keep in mind, is try not to wear the same color as the brides maids, you want to look good being you not apart of the bridal party. hope you find something great, good luck

Since you didn't list the time or location, I'm going to give them for you.
Morning to mid afternoon weddings require casual to informal attire. Think knee length dress or skirt.

Early evening and later require formal attire, think mid calf dresses to floor length gowns.

Indoor events are slightly more formal that outdoor, so take that into consideration. Outdoor occassions also need weather appropriate jackets or wraps if it's going to be chilly.
Browse around on line popular stores to get some style ideas. Then you can buy the same look, if needed, in a local store.
Ask your co-worker one day if you are still not sure.
