half of the earths land is not useful to humans. Why do you think this is so?

i am doing a test for homeschooling in 7th grade and this is a qeustion i need to answer in a short paragraph.

what do you mean its not useful? Even in the deserts there is oil, which is useful, and its nice not to have to cut down trees and kill seals to get that oil. much of the badlands, which i recently drove thru, may seem to be useless land, but its very beautiful and scenic. Just cause the earth isnt covered with crops and parking garages doesnt mean that it is not "useful" in some way.
