Unity in diversity is a a socio-ecological philosophy that describes a sense of oneness despite physical or psychological barriers.

The phrase is widely used to describe India, which is home to a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-religious society. The subcontinent's long and diverse history has given it a unique eclectic culture that is often associated with spirituality. India's diversity forces it, to either evolve strong foundations of tolerance and survive, or face break-up. Such a situation has forced Indian society to foster a sense of unity in diversity.

Life is very diverse, yet is also unified. Think about the difference between an E. coli bacterium, an elephant, and an Elm tree. Great diversity. Yet all of those are unified in their biochemistry and genetics. We can take a human gene and splice it into bacteria, and the bacteria will produce the human protein! Whether the organism is a bacterium, a worm, a fruit fly, and octopus, an alligator, an ostrich, a frog, or a human, it uses the same organic molecules (nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids) and biological processes (replication, transcription, translation, etc.). Just what one would expect if all extant life had evolved - by descent (which explains unity/similarities) with modification (which explains differences/diversity) - from a common ancestor.

It is probably related to the fact that the more biodiversity there is, the more stable an ecosystem is and the better chance of survival each organism has, so the more diversity there is the more each organism is helping each other to survive.

Collaboration feeds from diversity rather than homogeny. Homogeny fosters conformity rather than collaboration.

Which sounds more creative? Conformity is easier to forcefully sustain, by the way. It tends to be a more accessible form of stability than collaboration.

It can apply to more than religion.

It seems to depict certain minority groups (such as blacks saying it's an "us" thing or Latinos and their "lo nuestro" mantra) sticking together and having a sense of exclusive oneness in order to advance their own interests while excluding other races.
