You have to install an exhaust fan. That musty smell is caused by humidity leaving moisture in every crevice of that bathroom. It's very hard to remove once it gets in there as it usually comes from under floorboards or under the tub or toilet. Check behind the toilet and under the sink for water stains. Also leave the toilet lid shut, it reduces evaporation. Wash floor mats, towels and faceclothes often. Wash your rinse cup if you have one. Clean any mould from the grout in the tiles. If flooring is cracked, replace it (crucial). Also when you paint your bathroom, use several coats of PREMIUM paint (latex) to prevent the walls from absorbing. NEVER wallpaper a bathroom, it absorbs water.

Clean the floors and counters with a bleach or pinesol solution. If that doesn't fix the smell, put a bowl of potpourrii in the bathroom or burn a candle in there. If that doesn't help enough - paint the bathroom.

Put a fan in the far corner of the bathroom and point it outward. Open the doors and air out the whole house.

I know this sounds strange, but if you cut an unpeeled onion in half and leave the two halves in the room, they will absorb the smell. It works! Leave them in there until they've gone dry. Maybe two days.

If you can get hold of a steam cleaner and use it on the floor and walls, it should make the place nice and fresh again.
