Unfortunately I don't think there's ever really a sure fire way to stay safe in this day and age.. Even in your own home you're at risk.
Just be more aware of your surroundings. Maybe he could purchase a gun and carry it with him on trips....get it registered and all. Maybe avoid certain truck stops for gas...Who knows.
My Mom has been carjacked twice in the past 2 years in Norfolk Va. Like I said, no-ones "really" safe. I'm sorry about your friend, maybe also he could take some kind of self defence class.
