If you bought the phone in North America, a tri-band GSM phone will be sufficient. Quad-band is better since the phone will be able to access a second frequency band available in the rest of the world, but not necessary. Make sure the phone is SIM-unlocked, which will allow you to insert any carrier's SIM in your phone if you plan on doing so.

I have a tri-band phone and have it used it world wide, except at a hotel in Dominican Republic where they had no reception but 10mins out of the hotel it was fine!

It does`nt really matter what band your on. The first thing that the kidnappers will toss is the mobile so they can`t be traced!
Dont worry though, they will let you phone home to arrange the ramsom!

you need quad band as tri band will only work in europe,quad works world wide
