I am just wondering which foods to give my almost 6 mth old. I have been giving him Heinz beginner foods for over 1.5 mths now on the advice of our physician, but I don't know where to go next. Should I try meats? He has tried green beans, squash, sweet potato, peas, carrots, pears, applesauce, bananas, and peaches with no problems. Since he has been eating these for awhile can he now move on to more advanced food? I am asking because is the underlying reason for waiting to start meats and combination food, and the healthy foods we eat because or the potential allergy risks or because the baby hasn't developed digestively speaking yet? He is very eager to eat anything I give him! Can I give him mashed bananas and avocado at his age, please help!

Oh, he has no teeth and sometimes "mashes" with his teeth when he is playing or if we intice him to do it. He only has tried pureed food so far so he just kinda swallows it. I am soooo scared if I give him something chunkier he will choke! Or will he just be able to handle it? I mean he probably is "programmed" to start chewing right?

Hi there! you were correct, i was wrong, it is lysozyme, and as far as your baby is concerned, queries, 1) is he sitting up? 2) can he use his pointer finger and thumb to pick up items 3) does he place objects in his mouth by hisself? if a baby can sit up and pick up food items to put in his own mouth, then HE is ready to start eating veggies and fruits. I would hold off on the meats common sence says you need teeth to eat that stuff. Milk is the best thing for a child under the age of one year. Let him tell you what he needs, let him have 'bites' of your plate, mashed up of course, and feed him slowly, again formula is meant for a child for the first year of life, perferably breast milk. All allergies start with feeding a child too many items before his body is ready for them, if he can not 'feed' himself, but can hold a breast or bottle then thats what he needs for now. start with veggies, small amounts of fruits, ( you dont need to teach a child to like sweets!) then add breads, beans pasta, down the road, hey hes a baby!!! good luck and YOU'RE THE MOM, LET YOUR BABY TELL YOU WHEN HES READY FOR SOLIDS, IF HE AINT GOT TEETH GIRL THEN HES PROBABLY NOT READY FOR THEM, SO GO WITH THE FLOW, YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB I CAN TELL, BEST OF LUCK TO YOU NEW MOMMY ITS GONNA BE JUST FINE!!! lhn

No meats until eight months old.Mashed Bananas and potatoes are fine at this age.You can also start giving him #2 foods now.You will know when you try it if he is ready for it or not.Meats are not recommende for babies until 8months.They suggest at 8mths to try the plain meat in jar & mixing it w/veggies instead of the already mixed stuff. My doctor said there is barely any meats in the mixed stuff such as chicken & rice.Right now he seems to be doing fine with every thing you are feeding him.I would wait on the more advanced foods for now.Good Luck!!!

I am an old fasioned girl and don't take stock in what any doctor tells me as sometimes I find out that they too are humans and BIG mistakes. So my advise to you is a baby can eat anything his mother eats as long as it is soft enough for him to swallow. At his age nothing with chuncks use your blender and try a couple spoons full first if he spits it out then he probably is not ready to eat that particular food yet. Also taste is a big thing to if it don't taste good no matter if he is ready or not he is not going to eat it he will continue to spit it out so if it don't yaste good to you chances are it won't taste good to him. So just start with last nights left over chicken and put it inthe blender then taste it your self add what ever you need to make it taste good with in reason. Then try it. And that is the way I see it.

If he can "chew" or mash with his gums it's ok to give things with more texture. The only allergy hazards you have to worry about are nuts, cow milk (maybe, I gave my baby yogurt at about 9 months) and definitely NO honey until 12 months. If there are other allergies in your family, wait on those as well.
The only real way to find out is to try it. Still only introduce one new food a day to make sure.

all of those things are a concern and why doctors don't recommend giving babies certain things until later. you can try to give him bananas and avocado. does he try to mash his food with his gums? does he have any teeth? in order to eat chunkier stuff, he needs to have that mashing with the gums thing. oh, wait....i have a chart, hold on...
okay, this is the gerber start healthy eating plan chart. they sent it to me in the mail but i don't know how i got it, i didn't request it.
it goes more by the child's development vs. age.
cereal and first foods (gerber first foods and equivalents) should be given when the baby can sit supported and pushes up on his arms with straight elbows.
juices and second foods (meats, simple dinners like chicken noodle or apples and chicken, and gerber second foods) should be introduced when the baby can sit independently, can pick up and hold small objects and leans toward the food or spoon.
finger foods and third foods (and lil' entrees, remember this is gerber) can be given when the baby learns to crawl and may pull self up to stand
gerber graduate type foods (diced stuff, cookies, crackers) can be given somewhere between crawling and beginning to walk (pulls self to stand, stands alone and takes early steps) and meat sticks and meals, table food, can be given when baby reaches this beginning to walk stage.
hope that helps.

i would stick with smashed foods. until some teeth come in, the choking hazard is a real thing. bananas with a mesh masher for him to chew on. http://www.onestepahead.com/product/85202/307755/117.html
those are fun to start with new foods and so he won't choke. just wait on the meats for a while till he can chew. the canned stuff is nasty! when he can chew, just give him the real thing. good luck!

Babyfood meats are good. My daughter wasn't into "real meats" until she was about 3 years old.
Breakfast, you can rip up into small bite size pieces, pancakes (the frozen kind). Yogurts, peas, cooked small bite size carrots, apple sauces, cheerios (soaked in warm water for a few minutes to soften up), chicken or vegetable soups.
