I have a 98 Corolla, and at times the ignition will lock and I don't know what to do to unlock it. Usually I just end up jiggling the key around at the same time as the wheel while yelling at it. I don't know really what I'm doing that works, though I have a feeling it isn't the yelling.
Needless to say, it's pretty frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas of what may be locking the ignition in the first place, what I can do to prevent it from locking, and an easier way to unlock it if it locks?

Typically, the ignition will lock when the steering wheel has been moved by a certain amount after the keys have been removed.
To unlock the ignition, with your foot on the brake, slide your key in, turn the wheel all the way to the left, then back to the right wihle turning the key, and it should unlock.
Only way to avoid this is to not move the sterring wheel once the keys have been removed form the ignition. If you remove the keys and turn the wheel, you should notice that it locks when it reaches a certain point.

I remember when I got my license and I borrowed my parents car from time to time and the ignition would lock up like yours.
It is actually the steering wheel that triggers the locking and you can unlock it by turning the steering wheel back and forth. If the steering wheel is played with while the keys are out of the ignition it will usually cause the lock up or perhaps it was just put in a position that locks it up. Either way just turn it back and forth before starting your car and your ready to go.

When you shut off the car, make sure your steering wheel is straight or whe it locks turn your wheel till it unlocks.

it sounds like it your steering wheel locking..not the ignition..which that DOES happen. its normal..happens on all cars..
when the steering wheel is locked you cant turn your key. push the brake..and it will release the steering wheel..then from there you can turn your key.
