Complete twaddle - 'There is no arguing (note I've cleaned up your spelling) this point'???? - what an arrogant, ignorant fool you are! Eminem is (in my opinion, and bear in mind I rate Dylan, Springsteen, Difford and Tilbrook, Jarvis Cocker and many many others as quality songwriters) is one of the most gifted lyrical artists of our time. 'The Way I Am' is the only modern song to deal realistically with the pressures of fame and 'Cleaning Out My Closet' possesses true emotional rawness and power. So if you are going to be as ignorant as you obviously are, do everyone a favour and shut the £uck up...

Why Eminem is popular and why he is good are actually two different questions.
Popular? Because he's white but he has flow. Shock value. Soap opera life story. Dr. Dre's beats can't be denied, either.
Good? At his best (which is not often enough, IMHO), he possesses a fire that stems from speaking the emotional truth as he sees it. "Cleaning Out My Closet" is the perfect example. "Lose Yourself" and "Stan" are also in this category. He also has a gift for rhymes: "Don't let me lose you, I'm not trying to confuse you/When I let loose with this Uzi and just shoot through your Isuzu" (from "Patiently Waiting" w/50 Cent). Using the "ooze" rhyme both internally and externally is very clever.
Unfortuately, in the final analysis, his critical reputation rests on just a few songs. He all too often plays to the lowest common denominator and takes the easy way out.

Eminem is popular because he is a WHITE HOMOPHOBIC RAPPER. Middle white America hates hip hop music, when middle white America hates something it will make headline news. That's free promotion! Homosexuals have one of the fastest growing social groups in the United States, this group going public with there dislike even further propelled Eminem to stardom. Add up all these factors, shock value is what made Eminem a pop icon.

If you would sit down and really listen your his lyrics you could understand why some people like him. Also, all the negativity he got from the press really blew him up. People wanted to know what he was saying and doing that was so horrible. He uses real things that go on in everyday life. Some of them are just funny things he comes up with. Just like an author who writes stories. Some of them are based on real things and some of them are based on imagination. He just tells things the way he sees them wether real or imaginary.

i like the mars volta, because they're quality musicians, who craft each individual song with complex layers, deep and thoughtful lyrics, and a great sense of timing.
at the same time, i like young jeezy and lil john. though they're definitely not quality musicians, and most of their songs sound the same, and they're all about the same topics, it's just fun and easy to listen to.
eminem falls into that latter category. sure, it's not groundbreaking, or particularly original, but again, it's fun and easy to listen to. good beats, catchy hooks, and lyrics people can understand.

Well I don't like him, but I got to admit he does have some good songs. Like when he first started he had a song about being Hellbound, and the background music was from zelda. Great...

RAP is CRAP without the "C". Look at the type of mental pygmies that CRAP appeals to. It's not worth wasting even a nano-second thinking about.
