While I've been surfing around here recently, I've noticed that when a kid asks for help some answerer's feel the need to tell them that they should figure it out for themselves or learn better time management or some such bunk. I mean the topic here is "Homework Help", right?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but, I thought the whole Internet thing was supposed to be a way for everyone to seek info and exchange ideas.
If you feel the need to blast someone, why not go to "Politics and Government" or "Religion and Spirituality" there are tons of nut cases there who you can verbally abuse.

This could be a great resource for students, but they won't use it if they always get flack. If you don't know the answer, can't you just leave the kid alone?

You are absolutely right - this is HOMEWORK HELP. With the emphasis on HELP! Unfortunately some of the students asking questions think that this is DO MY HOMEWORK FOR ME. This is not the idea. Giving hints or explaining concepts is what actually HELPS the student. Not to mention the fact that a good number of the answers are wrong.

Especially with the math questions, I will give a different example that will help the student understand the question, and then instruct them to DO THEIR OWN WORK. How are they supposed to learn otherwise?

Some people give flack because the questions are so easy, and it appears that laziness is the reason for a question. For example: "Please tell me which Great Lakes border Canada and the United States?" This is pure laziness. The time it took to write the question should have been used for a web search for an atlas to look up the answer. Or heaven forbid a book was actually opened. It is understandable why some people give flack in these cases.

I will help anyone who has a question that I can answer. However, when I see the same person post over 10 questions to the homework help section all on math, I get a little ticked off. Yes it's ok to ask for help and this is a good resource but I would like to see some people actually do some of their own work and not just post their entire math worksheet online for others to do.

I think sometimes people give a biting response when the student doesn't ask for help as in "How do you go about doing this?" or "How can I understand this?" but instead asks someone else to give the answer or to find the information for him or her.

If someone needs to know how to set up a math problem or how to begin searching for information on a topic, that's "homework help." If someone says, "I have a book report due tomorrow and haven't had time to read the book, tell me what it's all about," that's not "help"; that's laziness.

Yeah, I agree with you. Internet is a source of information where kids can research info which will help them with their homework. But some of them ask for solutions in problems without thinking on their own. I mean, it's right to search for websites and information for a project, but not ready solutions of math problems. And don't forget that those who tell the students to figure it out themselves might just wanna earn easily some points by answering.

There is a huge different between help and someone posting their homework on this, and expecting others to do it for them. I personally have no problem guiding someone in the right direction. But when someone come on this and say's ok folk I to write up 250 words for an essay etc.

I agree. I don't know why some people are so cranky. People on this site are usually just asking for a little help, not for someone to do an entire assignment for them. If you can't post something helpful, don't post. Thank you.
