Okay I'm going to answer this in two steps, first War then Trade.
WAR
War is a means of resolving conflict between different countries (World Wars) or within countries (Civil wars). War is generally used as a last resort to resolve any disputes that are held between countries. If war is not imposed then the agressor (say, for example, Germany during the Second World War when he invaded Poland and was dead-set on invading EVERYONE ELSE) then those who fall victim to the agressor (such as...THE REST OF THE WORLD) will succumb to the agressor and the world will be run by the agressor. (did you catch all that? lol In short, if you don't stop people who are trying to invade by starting a war with them then you will be overrun and taken over).
War is also good for the spirit of the country. For example, years ago people of a country had to find some sense of nationalism so the only way that they could say that they were better then other countries was by how many people they had killed of the other country. This has now changed though, people are more likely going to find a sense of nationalism in sporting achievements (such as the Olympics) rather then on the battle field.
Finally war is good for technology. War increases the technology of countries. One of the major examples of this would be seen in the military sectors, with companies such as Raytheon being allowed to test out and sell their Patriot Missles in the 1990 Gulf War. Also war can increase civilian technology which needed the input of war to start, for example a voice recognition program was developed in Iraq for the purpose of war and has since been pushed into the civilian market.
TRADE
Trade is a practice that allows countries to purchase goods of each other in lieu of some form of currency. This allows for a wider variety of goods to be purchased (if you are talking about foreign trade) and thus more competitive pricing within goods in both local and foreign produce.
If, however, you are willin to know how it can REALLY benifit a civilisation then all you need to do is force a country that you have a hold over (such as in an empire) to purchase goods ONLY from your country. This will allow you to set your own prices without the fear of competition. This is also know as a monopoly. An example of this sort of trade is existent in early India-England trade relations.
I hope that this has been somewhat helpful, and I hope that this is what you meant, otherwise I have wasted a great deal of time doing something completely irrelevant! lol
