If they see a boy on the ultrasound at 20 weeks, it's usually because the genitalia is in plain view so to speak. They say that usually if they say it's a boy it's correct. I think it's sometimes the girls that mess them up and the guesses end up incorrect.

On the other hand, I'm not sure if I would start decorating and buying clothes based on the scan.

Our doc told us we had a boy from the ultrasound at 19 weeks. When we got the DNA sample back, the DNA confirmed it was a boy. Ours was right.

a girl can be mistaken for a boy if the umbilical cord gets in the way. this is what happened to me. i was told twice that i was having twin boys at scans, but on the third scan i was told it was a boy and girl, which was the case.
if the scan is very clear and the cord can be seen well away from the genital area then id say its probably right, but if your baby is breech the cord could hang down between the legs and make it impossible to be certain. this is what happened with charlotte.
usually a sonographer wouldnt tell you unless they were fairly sure, i have 8 kids ( 5 boys, 3 girls) and theyve been right every time, apart from the twins.
good luck for the birth and the future, no matter what you have, are you secretly wishing that it is a girl? if thats the case, id try to accept what the sonographer has told you, and look forward to another little man x

Most Drs will tell you that any ultrasound to determine sex is not 100% however it is more accurate if they say it's a boy than if they say it's a girl.........because they have to actually see the "boy" body parts before commiting. If you are going to have another scan then I would wait until then to confirm.... BTW: I am at 22 weeks and just found out mine is a girl....I already have boy/girl twins ( they are 14)

Yes, I have 3 boys. And one girl.

I have high risk pregnancies an have ultrasounds with every Dr, visit. At 20 weeks you can for-sure tell a boy from a girl.

I found out will all 3 of my boys around 13 weeks. Boys have that little something special that sticks out to confirm it.

Congrats!! Boys are GREAT!!!

Although the gender of the baby has been decided by the 16th week, scans are not 100% accurate even at 20 weeks. The only ways to find out for sure are invasive.

They can never be 100% certain, it all depends on how the baby is lying - the umbilical cord on a baby girl can sometimes be mistaken for boy bits! Buy creams and whites instead and save your blue or pink clothes buying until you know for sure!

It's easier for them to get it wrong and say that it is a girl when its really a boy than say that its a boy and its really a girl

This is because they would've had to have seen something to say it was a boy in the first place

I hope you get what you want and if not the baby is healthy
Good Luck
