I wanted to know about proofreading..I have read that in NYC...it can be a good job at night, with some down time and pays around 20 to 30 per hour. Is it a flexible job? And is there a demand for it? Are there certain agencies that handle proofreaders?

Proof reading can be a very profitable job, but it's a lot of hard work and you usually have to have a lot of experience doing it to get any good jobs.

The hours are pretty much flexible, but you usually have a deadline when the editors would need the finished product by. You also need to be extremely good with your time management skills, not to mention your familiarity with all the tools a proofreader needs...style sheets, reader marks, etc.

It pays a lot, but you are also working a lot of hours. Personally, I would rather just freelance writing articles for on line magazines if you need extra money. Not as much cash, but less of a hassle.
