Hello all!

My sister-in-law has killed her computer. She needs to do a system restore, but doesn't want to lose all of her pictures, etc. Is there any solution that will let me take her hard drive out of her PC, attach it to mine w/out me opening mine up to do it? Is there some sort of USB->ATA connector I can get? Or, will I have to get an enclosure to do this?

Thank you much!

Man...I HATE opening up my PC...I have it "out of the way" so my wife doesn't have to see all the cables...every time I take it apart, I have to essentially set everything up from scratch....argh...

you will have to open up another machine to install the hard drive, but you don't need an enclosure for it. just plug it into the IDE cable of the other machine, make sure the pc box is grounded and let the drive sit on the bottom of the case. make sure to set the jumpers on your own hard drive to master and the other hard drive to slave.

Go to an electronic store and buy a external USB hard drive conversion kit. I bought one at Best Buy around $20 and not only did I get my data back but how I'm the proud owner of a portable 250 GB USB drive, which I use to backup the data from my new computer.

By the time you buy the data cable and a power connection for the drive you've already spend more than just getting the conversion kit. otherwise crack the case open and plug it in to your computers drive controller and power supply.

It could be a bad boot sector. If it will turn on try booting up with the Windows CD and doing a repair. once in the recovery console do a chkdsk /R. This will repair bad boot sectors and allow you to access the files

you just need to stick her hard drive into your PC (plug into into a spare hard drive IDE plug)
