I can't stand them myself...the loooonng storylines that get dragged out every episode, the outlandish plot twists, and melodrama bogs me down. I've a few friends and a couple ex-es who LOVE them, though. Why?

For the same reason that film and TV are so popular in general - pure, unadulterated escapism... and soap opera has that by the bucketful.
The demographic that tend to get attracted soaps with, shall we say, fairly poor production values are those who usually feel they have something to escape from. The soap opera genre basically feeds off the shattered hopes and dreams of it's audience, while simultaneously (and through the adverts placed carefully in the breaks) making them think they are missing something or are not worthy of more. It's almost a parasite/host relationship, which unfortunately is all too prevelant in many forms of entertainment today.

I think soap operas are so popular first because they're addictive. They're on five days a week and, once you get involved with the characters and story lines, you really want to know what will happen. Also, they've been on so long that you get to really see a character develop and change over time (some have grown up on the shows). But, more importantly, soaps cover it all- drama, romance, comedy, crime, topical issues... and so on.

Why Are Television Soaps Popular

I personally believe that it's because some people live in a role-playing fantasy world, where they can imagine themselves as one of the characters. This is because the script often reflects real-life situations that are common to most women (and maybe even some men). In other words, some people can relate to them. It may also be that many women find the men on the show(s) more attractive than their boyfriends. Just another part of what I mentioned before. Personally, I think the stuff is garbage!

Young and the Restless still tells the best stories with the best actors in the soap opera universe. The rest of the soap universe has resorted to trickery and youth to maintain ratings and have failed miserably (One Life to Live on ABC is the biggese example). Y&R has been #1 rated soap for almost 19 years.

They are so popular because it shows people how messed up other people lives are, and in some ways it makes them feel better about themselves. I personally love soap operas. It gives me people to relate to and its one of the many constant things in my life.

Because they continue, just like day to day life; because most of the characters - in spite of education, money and fame - are too stupid to come in out of the rain; because if you're a regular watcher, you always have someone to feel superior to.

That's what I'd like to know! I think they are really stupid and a waste of energy. How does anyone actually enjoy the things?
