Most early films were shot at a frame rate of 18 frames per second (fps). These films playback fast when shown on a modern 24 fps projector. Telecines (the devices that allow film to be played on television) are all 24 fps and a complicated formula is used to compensate for the fact that the television frame rate (in the US) is 30 fps. So when you see an 18 fps film shown on television, it is always fast because the telecine runs at 24 fps.

The film cameras were hand cranked so there was no way to control the exposure time. Then the projector went at a constant speed. If the person cranking the film was fast the movie was slow motion, if the person was slow then the movie was fast. When the tecnology was developed to run the camera at a constant speed then the movies were more life like.

Because people died younger and therfore moved about very quickly in order to live a full life.
Its the frames per second that were captured. Since there were less frames captured, the film speed was increased to allow the characters to apprear more smooth while in motion.
