Horses are prone to over exertion just like people. They cannot gallop with a rider for more than a few minutes in relentless heat such as is found in Florida 9 months out of every year.

They need clean water to drink at all times.

Horses can get a sunburn just like people - they need to have shade provided for them at all times.

Horses will NOT eat soiled hay.

If something you do scares or spooks you horse, keep doing it so he will learn it is nothing to fear.

Horses are not stupid. If you feed a horse treats from your hand all the time, they will constantly be reaching for your hand and quite possibly bite it looking for a treat. Put treats in a bucket and let the horse eat it from the bucket. He knows you put it there for him.

DMK is wrong about horses being used to make glue. There are two slaughter houses in the U.S.A. and they are both in TX. The horse meat is a delacacy arcoss seas, used for dog food, and used to feed big cats in zoos. It is a horrible process in wich the horses are slaughterd.
1. Horses are bought at auctions, stolen, or bougth cheap from private owners.
2. Then they are transported in livestock tucks, like the ones you see on the highway carring pigs, sheep, and horses. They cram in and beacse horses have much longer necks they are forced to keep their heads close to the gound. This is not a very comfortable position for a long ride, sometimes a few weeks.
3. Once they arive at the slughter house they are poked with electrick prods to get them off of the trailer. Then the put them in holding corrals. Once in the holding corralsthey check the horses for freeze brands and microchips. This is the law incase any of the horses have been stolen. The horses who have freezebrands and microchipps are moved to a seperate corral.
4. Then the horse are put in a seris of chutes leading to the Kill Box. Once they arive at the kill box a worker with a bolt gun stuns the horse in the head. The horse is not killed and fully consious. They need the blood to drain from the body while the horses is awake.
5. The horse is hoited up by the hind legs and it's throat is slit open and the horse stugles as it is being bled to death.

Sorry if there is alot of spelling mistakes, the spellcheck would not work.

They require lots of work and knowledge.
They can die from an upset stomach.
They need to have shots once or twice per year.
They need to have their feet trimmed by the farrier every 6-8 weeks.
They need to have the vet float thier teeth once per year.
They need to be wormed every 8 weeks all year long.
They are expensive and very time consuming.
If you are willing to put for the effort and have the time they are a wonderful animal to have but they require alot ofwork.

Lots of hay and grass, feet care, LOTS and Lots of love.
Brush them and spend time with them daily. You didnt say how old your horse is.
Not sure what area your in, but hay here right now is very expensive.

Good Luck

You first need to know they require alot of your time and money. A horse is not cheap to care for. They require alot of grain and hay and water. Brushing daily, hoof trimming every 6 weeks. and alot more...Make sure you're ready for that responsibilty first.
