There are a gazillon operas. They've been writing operas in one form or another for 300 years.

Famous operas:

Puccini: Madama Butterfly, La Boheme
Mozart: Cosi fan Tutti, Magic Flute, Don Giovanni
Verdi: Nabucco, Otello, Aida
Bizet: Carmen
Rossini: William Tell, La Cintorentella
