Orientalism is a broad topic and to single out just three characteristic is difficult and arbitrary. Your question is about their specific way of thinking, or conduct or food and dress again it is impossible to list out..
Oriental consists of whole gamut and again. There are no watertight compartments about a particular place in this globalized world.
There are many religions, sects, communities, creeds, faiths, and ways of living, cultures, races, nations and states.
So is Occidentalism, but not with such diversity.
For breeding hatred toward one kind of people may happen even in the homogeneous neighborhood in New York. Take republicans, democrats. Northerners, Southerners, etc leaving alone their religious inclinations.
Hate begets hate. It is self sustaining illness. Until such time humans exist it will be there. The more the interaction the more it gives scope for hatred.
But on positive note, by and large, humans everywhere are peace loving creatures, I mean 99.99 percent of us, that comes with the nature of humanism and I believe we should be surviving these conflicts in the long run.
