When you sleep on your right side, the weight of your pregnant belly rests on the main vein that supplies the baby with oxygen and blood. A good position is to sleep on your left side with a pillow between your knees to keep your back lined up straight. A body pillow was my best friend during my first pregnancy. Back pain is a *****!!

Because of the way the placenta lies and how it cuts off the circulation to baby.
Sorry this stupid American had to add a few FACTS and show that there is truth to this "american myth" LOL. Here is a copy and paste of WHY to sleep on left side.
Although there's no real harm in sleeping on your right side, lying on your left side is actually good for you and your baby: It improves the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta and it helps your kidneys efficiently eliminate waste products and fluids from your body. That, in turn, reduces swelling in your ankles, feet, and hands. If you train yourself to sleep on your left side early on, you'll have an easier time falling asleep when your belly is bulging later.
During the second half of pregnancy, avoid sleeping on your back, a position that puts the full weight of your uterus on your spine, back muscles, intestines, and the inferior vena cava (the vein that transports blood from your lower body to the heart). Back-sleeping can also put you at risk for backaches and hemorrhoids, inefficient digestion, and impaired breathing and circulation. Lying on your back in the second and third trimester can also cause changes in blood pressure. For some women, it can cause a drop in blood pressure that can make them feel dizzy; for others, it can cause an unwanted increase in blood pressure.

Somehow it increases circulation, reduces blood pressure and pressure on the bladder. I don't think the guideline is ONLY the left side, it is just a preferred position suggestion. The pregnancy police will not show up if you sleep on your right side. LOL!

Sleeping on your stomach is out of the question, sleeping on your back puts more pressure on your body and some women find it difficult to sleep that way. Sleeping on your side is the most comfortable position.

Yep what Tinkerbell said. My Dr. said though as long as you are comfortable you can sleep however you want. I am 21 weeks and I have slept on my stomach until the last 2 weeks.

THERE IS A MAJOR ARTERY THAT RUNS ALONG YOUR RIGHT SIDE SO LAYING ON YOUR LEFT SIDE WILL ALLOW GOOD BLOOD FLOW WHILE YOU ARE SLEEPING FOR SO MANY HRS. IF YOU CANNOT SLEEP ON THAT SIDE OR ALWAYS FIND YOURSELF WAKING UP ON THE LEFT DON'T WORRY IT'S NOT GOING TO HURT YOU OR BABY!!

I've never heard that. However, when I was pregnant I got high blood pressure and they said to lie on my left side to help lower it.
